The Soda Water Scare

26 May 2012

A print-ready copy of this issue of “Carbon Sense” can be downloaded from:

http://carbon-sense.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/soda-water-scare.pdf

With the failure of “Global Warming” the climatists have concocted a new alarm – the soda water scare.

Their computer models are forecasting that the oceans, which weigh 300 times more than all the gases in the atmosphere, are being turned acidic by the 0.0012% (12 parts per million) of man-made additions to the carbon dioxide (CO2) in Earth’s atmosphere.

CO2 is a natural gas that dissolves in water.  The amount absorbed depends upon how much CO2 there is in the air, and the temperature of the water.  CO2 dissolves best in cold water and is expelled as the water warms. And far more would be absorbed if there was 100% CO2 in the atmosphere above.

When concentrated CO2 gas is bubbled under high pressure into ice cold water much CO2 dissolves, producing acidic soda water whose pH (acidity) could be as low as 4. This is 1,000 times more acidic than pure water whose pH is a neutral 7.

But oceans are much warmer than that and atmospheric CO2 is at much lower pressure. Therefore in the open ocean, pH seldom gets below 8, ten times more alkaline than pure water.

This weak soda water could only be described as “acidic” by someone pushing an alarmist agenda. There are no measurements that show that the pH of the ocean is changing more now than in the past – only models. In historical terms, atmospheric CO2 levels are now close to record lows. Corals and other ocean life have flourished in atmospheric levels of CO2 far higher than today’s.

We are told that the tiny bit of natural soda water in still-alkaline sea water will dissolve corals and shells, kill fish and create oceanic mayhem?

If soda water is so dangerous, then how come people consume it in copious amounts in beer, scotch and fizzy drinks?

All plant life, on land and in water, flourishes if CO2 is added to the currently meagre natural supply. All ocean life depends on the availability of CO2 that feeds algae, plankton and other sea plants.

To suggest that today’s minute supply of plant food in the atmosphere will cause an acidity crisis in the oceans is baseless scare mongering. The computer models used to forecast this disaster are no more reliable than those that have failed to forecast global temperatures for the last 15 years.

The soda water scare is not about ocean acidity. It is part of a scheme to drive fishermen from the Coral Sea promoted by the same people who want to force graziers from the grasslands, foresters from the forests and miners from the coal fields.

Like so much in Australia’s politicised research industry, too much ocean research focusses on designing computer models to manufacture crises which are then used to justify locking up the Coral Sea and hobbling coastal industries and development.

The new frontiers for ocean research are not along lazy tropical beaches or beside Coral Sea resorts. The secrets to past and future climate changes will be found by real observations in the deep oceans along the mid-ocean rifts where periodic volcanism will have massive effects on oceans, atmosphere and global climates.

Germany faces some painful Truths on Green Energy

No modern industrial society can function without reliable electricity supplies; and it cannot compete in the world without low cost energy. Greens pose the greatest threat to reliable low cost electricity supplies.

Germany, more than any other country, has led the green/global warming hysteria. It is therefore appropriate that Germany is now starting to reap the dividends from that destructive chapter – soaring electricity costs and now the real chance of blackouts during the next cold, windless, gloomy winter.

Germany has access to four proven and efficient methods for generating electricity:

  • coal (domestic lignite),
  • nuclear (domestic and imported from France),
  • gas (imported from Russia), and
  • hydro (domestic and imported from Scandinavia).

However, German Greens oppose construction of any new coal, nuclear, gas or hydro plant; are forcing the closure of nuclear plants; would like to see closure of coal plants; and oppose exploration for shale gas in Europe.

What do they expect to keep the lights on in Germany? Wind and solar energy.

Fritz Vahrenholt was a hero of the German Greens for decades. He wrote a best-selling book on the dangers of chemicals in the environment, became a “Senator for the Environment”, advised Shell on improving its environmental credentials, was CEO of a wind energy company and, until recently, was in charge of the renewable energy division of RWE, Germany’s biggest energy company.

However he has suddenly fallen out of favour with the Greens because he wrote a book:

“The Forgotten Sun – Why the Climate Catastrophe is not taking place”.

In this book he concludes that the IPCC has underestimated the role of the sun in determining earth’s climate, failed to forecast the fact that world temperatures have been on a plateau for 15 years, and ignored the natural 60 year Pacific Decadal Oscillation.

Vahrenholt has also learned some painful practical lessons about green energy.

He relates a story on how RWE invests 1.2 billion euros in renewable energy but that huge investment generates unreliable energy and no profits.

“What Germany is doing now is incredible. Although we get the same amount of sunlight as Alaska, 800 hours a year, we have installed 50% of the global solar PV capacity. With all these solar roofs we generate only 3% of our electricity but it is costing us 8 billion euros a year! And this will go on for twenty years because of the feed-in tariff. One of the arguments is that it’s generating jobs but this is only partly true, because nowadays 85% of the panels are coming from China and the US.” He describes the difficulties solar energy causes to the grid, and the negative economics of buying electricity when it is expensive and being forced to sell it, sometimes at negative prices. “Our current approach is a dead end”.

Vahrenholt also notes that “Only Europe, Australia and New Zealand are taking measures against carbon dioxide but these countries emit only 14% of the world’s total. . . . we’re destroying the foundations of our prosperity . . . and putting at risk our automotive, steel, copper, chemicals and silicon industries.”

The European Energy Review has a long thoughtful article on the message that Fritz Vahrenholt has for green energy “experts” in Germany (and Australia).
It is well worth reading carefully:

German Energy on the Wrong Track

“Indeed I think we (Germans) are on an awkward energy path.

“To give a few examples: on twenty per cent of our agricultural land we are growing energy crops, mainly corn. This monoculture is endangering natural diversity. We are burning wheat to produce bio-ethanol. For the first time in forty years we even have to import wheat. Importing food like wheat for energy use, is that really the solution we want?

“Several federal states (Länder) are opening up their forests for wind energy with dramatic impacts. For each wind turbine you have to cut a hole in the forest of five to seven hectares. To build a turbine of 80 tons you need big cranes and a road through the forest. A lot of forest will be destroyed and many animals, like bats for example, will be killed. The fear for climate change is so big that the Germans are even sacrificing their forests.”

The Wheels are coming off the Wind Energy Gravy Train

Marita Noon, writing in “Right Side News”, summarises the sad state of the wind industry:

The wind energy industry has been having a hard time. The taxpayer funding that has kept it alive for the last twenty years is coming to an end, and those promoting the industry are panicking.  Perhaps this current wave started when one of Big Wind’s most noted supporters, T. Boone Pickens, said in an MSNBC interview, “I’m in the wind business…. I lost my ass in the business.”

Michael Liebreich of the research firm Bloomberg New Energy Finance says, “With a financially stressed electorate, it’s really hard to go to them and say: ‘Gas is cheap, but we’ve decided to build wind farms for no good reason that we can articulate.’”

Green Companies Crash and Teeter

The Renixx index is the first global stock index of the 30 largest renewable energy companies in the world. This index has lost 90% of its value since 2008. Seventeen companies once in this index have already filed for bankruptcy and fourteen more are teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. This is mainly caused by the progressive withdrawal of subsidies.

Rallies to “Smash the Carbon Tax”.

The Gillard/Green carbon tax becomes law on 1 July 2012. To show what we think of this tax, protest rallies are being organised in major cities by CATA (The Consumers and Taxpayers Association) and supported by the Carbon Sense Coalition and other groups.

Rallies are planned for Sunday 1st July 2012 11.30am in Canberra, Sydney (Hyde Park) and Brisbane (King George Square). CATA is suggesting people buy a blow-up baseball bat to indicate their displeasure:

For more information see: http://www.stopcarbonlies.com/canberra_rally.html

The Last Word

Three Inconvenient Facts

Providing the Green/Gillard government lasts that long, it appears that the carbon tax will become law on 1st July 2012.

For the first year or so, the promoters and beneficiaries will try to silence all opposition.

The first weapon will be bribery – give a special exemption or handout to everyone who complains.

The second weapon will be threats. Businesses who complain that the carbon tax has forced them to increase their prices will be threatened by government attack dogs.

See: http://www.infowars.com/australians-face-huge-fines-for-speaking-ill-of-new-carbon-tax/

The third weapon will be government propaganda. Climate commissioners, CSIRO, the ABC, the green politicians and all the alarmist apologists such as Greenpeace and WWF will come up with daily stories of climate scares or green energy subsidies at work.

Sceptic voices such as “Carbon Sense” will struggle to be heard above the din.

But, sitting there, like Vultures on a dead tree watching them struggle in the swamps of reality, are three inconvenient facts:

  1. There has been no global warming for 14 years:

Global monthly average lower troposphere temperature (thin line) since 1979 according to University of Alabama at Huntsville, USA. The thick line is the simple running 37 month average.

Source: http://www.climate4you.com/Text/Climate4you_March_2012.pdf

There is no evidence that carbon dioxide controls global temperature.

  1. More carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will have huge benefits for all life on earth.

Opposition to this massive stupidity will never cease. Please help us spread the word.

GMOs (genetically modified foods) may alter organ function

May 4, 2012

The science is coming out with proof that genetically modified foods are NOT the same as the naturally occurring foods and food products.  The impact on our health is, I believe, already being felt. We have increased incidences of obesity, diabetes, early-onset puberty, immunodeficiency diseases and autism, to mention just a few.

The FDA requires that restaurants label all of their food offerings with calorie, fat, salt, carbohydrate, etc. content, yet has determined that we do not have to know when we are eating GMO foods.

EPA has a long history of crucifying businesses

April 29, 2012

A video from 2010 recently surfaced, showing EPA Region VI Administrator Al Armendariz explaining his philosophy of enforcement, which he admitted was rather crude, but went ahead anyway to tell his audience:

“It was kind of like how the Romans used to, you know, conquer villages in the Mediterranean.  They’d go in to a little Turkish town somewhere, they’d find the first five guys they saw and they’d crucify them.”

This revelation has created quite a stir in the media, with White House Press Secretary Jay Carney denying to the press corps that the EPA’s standard operating procedure is to crucify oil and gas producers. “Clearly, there is not an effort of the nature that you talk about,” said Carney.

The truth is, the EPA has been using these thuggish tactics and “making examples” of corporations for years.

Under the Clinton Administration, Carol M. Browner, who served as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, initiated a law suit against seven utility companies across the country; Tampa Electric Company, American Electric Power, FirstEnergy, Illinois Power, Southern Indiana Gas & Electric Company, Cinergy, and the Southern Company. Tampa Electric Company was the first utility to enter into a settlement with the EPA and DOJ.

The Notice of Violation and Complaint against Tampa Electric Company, initiated in November 1999, charged that TECO “violated the law at their power plants by making major modifications to the plants without installing equipment required to control smog, acid rain and soot.”

As a part of the agreement, the Consent Decree states “WHEREAS, Tampa Electric has denied and continues to deny the violations alleged in the NOV and the Complaint; maintains that it has been and remains in compliance with the Clean Air Act and is not liable for civil penalties or injunctive relief; and states that it is agreeing to the obligations imposed by this Consent Decree solely to avoid the costs and uncertainties of litigation and to improve the environment in and around the Tampa Bay area of Florida…” This statement clearly proves that Tampa Electric Company settled to avoid prolonged and costly litigation by the EPA and the DOJ.

The News Release from the EPA stated “This agreement is the first to result from a national enforcement action aimed at cutting emissions from coal-fired power plants… We are hopeful that other utilities will follow Tampa Electric example, and help bring similar clean-air benefits to many other areas in this country.”

In the settlement agreement, Tampa Electric Company agreed to pay a $3.5 million dollar civil penalty and to invest between $10 and $11 million dollars on “environmentally beneficial projects in the region designed to mitigate the impact of emissions from the company’s plants.” TECO also committed to a $1.2 billion investment over a ten year period to provide cleaner energy by retro-fitting existing power plants and increasing the use of renewable energy sources to provide electricity to its customers.

As a customer of TECO, seeing advertisements on television and receiving updates in the mail, and doing further research which revealed the EPA lawsuit in 1999, I questioned a source in the industry who builds power plants if there was a connection. He flatly stated “If you are asking if a gun was put to their head…ABSOLUTELY!”

In 2004 Tampa Electric Company announced that it “voluntarily” joined the Chicago Climate Exchange.  It has also pursued clean energy development and implementation with investments such as TECO Guatemala.

Then EPA administrator Carol M. Browner grew up in Florida, and headed the Department of Environmental Regulation from 1991-1993.  In December 2008 President-elect Barack Obama named Browner to be the Director of the White House Office of Energy and Climate Change Policy , informally known as the “Climate” or “Energy Czar”. In 2011 she left the Obama Administration, and is currently a Distinguished Senior Fellow of George Soros’ Center for American Progress and a member of the organization’s Executive Committee.

The EPA has been bullying and intimidating corporations for a long time, and their standard operating procedure is precisely what Al Armendariz was caught articulating on that video tape.

The ever-expanding and over-reaching regulatory powers of the EPA must be reined in by Congress. Common sense needs to be restored to environmental decision making, and economic impact must be considered in all environmental legislation.

Start with approving the Keystone XL Pipeline.

Light rail back in the news in Tampa!

April 28, 2012

I guess we are going to have to start over again fighting this war…and IT IS A WAR! The citizens of Hillsborough County, Florida voted overwhelmingly AGAINST light rail in 2010. Apparently, the powers that be think they know better! So…I am going to start combing the news for rail articles and posting what I find.

Here goes:

Indian rail bosses order train drivers to clear bodies off tracks - Looks like they are negatively affecting the schedules!

Train runs through Mae Klong Market in Thailand - Oh yeah! That looks SAFE!

Crowded train in Japan - Your kid can get a new job as a ‘people packer’!

Train coming in India - Tampa Bay area light rail would NEVER affect pedestrians and bicyclists like this, would it?

Mumbai Trains – this is the first stop of the day, so it is most crowded. Pack em and stack em!

That’s enough for today, don’t you think?

Viv Forbes – Carbon Sense Coalition – on the “climate change” fight from Down Under

April 27, 2012

Viv Forbes, of Carbon Sense Coalition, has shared his latest postings with me. This is a global movement to stop the implementation of carbon taxes and defeat the One World Governance dreamers. Please share with your friends and family, as you will see how this is affecting all of us who have come to the realization that our very freedom and liberty is at stake.

Carbon Credit Forests
- the CO2.con

28 April 2012.

A print-ready copy of this issue of “Carbon Sense” can be downloaded from:

http://carbon-sense.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/co2-dot-con.pdf

CO2Australia boasts of planting three million carbon credit trees. This is “just the beginning” of a new bubble industry, the CO2.con.

This bubble is set to inflate rapidly. To offset just one day of Qantas operations, CO2 promoters must plant more than 200,000 trees in permanent forests covering 130 hectares. How much land is required to offset all Australian power stations, industry and transport?

Yes these trees will consume carbon dioxide. However CO2 levels today are well below what is ideal for plant growth. While they are growing strongly, these trees will suck the gas of life from the atmosphere, competing strongly with nearby crops and plant life for the traces of carbon dioxide remaining.

Then as the trees mature, growth stops. The aging forest just sits there, some trees growing, some dying and net carbon sequestration ceases. It becomes a sterile shrine to the green religion whose main impact on the biosphere is providing a haven for feral animals and noxious weeds.

Green spruikers claim that they only use land not suitable for anything else. Wrong! Every bit of Australia not covered by road, cities, parks or deserts can support crops, timber-getting or grazing animals. Carbon-credit forests gnaw away at this national land asset every year.

Moreover, CO2.con investors, like all speculators, want quick returns. Their quick return demands rapidly growing trees in arable country – deserts and salt pans are uneconomical. Thus the wheat/sheep belt is shrinking. No one can demonstrate any climate or environmental benefit from the CO2.con.

Forcing consumers and taxpayers to fund this large scale permanent land sterilisation is clearly unsustainable. All Australians fund this destruction via increased prices for electricity, cement, steel, air tickets and rail fares, and reduced land for food production. The carbon tax will increase their burden. Like all bubble industries, the CO2.con industry must end in tears, and the sooner it ends the better.

Vested Interests in the Climate Debate

A personal response by Viv Forbes to several attacks in the media

It seems that whenever global warming alarmists have no supporting evidence or logic, they resort to name calling using terms such as “vested interests”.

Warmists claim that earth’s climate is controlled by man-made carbon dioxide, mainly from coal and oil. A huge climate industry has been constructed on this flimsy foundation. Is Australia best served if we base energy policies solely on uninformed or emotional opinions from rock stars, lawyers, economists, union leaders and the climate industry? Surely it is sensible to also listen to scientists and engineers with training and experience in the origin, history, chemistry, geology, physics, extraction, utilisation and waste products of coal and oil and the behaviour and role of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere? Why is all government industry “pure” and all real industry “suspect”? There are venal people and those promoting vested interests everywhere.

Another tedious slur is that those who opposes climatism are supporters of big coal and “lobbyists are paid by multinationals to produce this stuff”. In my case this is very easy to refute. Just look at what I have said and written and check that against policies supported by coal industry lobbyists such as the Queensland Resources Council (QRC).
(It can be found here:  https://www.qrc.org.au/_dbase_upl/Minerals%20Industry%20Principles%202011.pdf ).

The QRC people ARE paid to promote the views of the coal industry – I am not. They promote three key policy pillars – a global agreement to ration and tax carbon, emissions permit trading, and subsidies for green power.

Never have I or the Carbon Sense Coalition ever supported any of these shaky pillars. We have repeatedly urged rejection of the Kyoto agreement; we have been consistent critics of emissions trading and the carbon tax; and we oppose money wasted in subsidising green energy toys and silly schemes like Carbon Capture and Burial.

Other superficial critics gleefully report that anything I say is merely promoting my vested interests in Stanmore Coal, a small Australian owned and managed explorer in which I hold shares. The reverse is true – Stanmore will be less harmed by the carbon tax than many other Australian businesses and may even derive some benefits. Stanmore’s main asset is an open cut thermal coal deposit planning to export coal, probably to Asia for power generation. The carbon tax in Australia will fall more heavily on gassy underground coal mines and will also drive our power intensive industries overseas, probably to Asia, thus increasing Asian demand for coal from projects such as Stanmore.

Naturally the snipers never reveal my long and continuing interest and experience in pasture management, grassland conservation, sustainable soils and the carbon cycle. I do not condone pollution or environmental degradation.

Every Australian has a vested interest in the outcome of this suicidal war on carbon – some will get unearned benefits, most will be lumbered with hidden costs. So instead of smearing, name calling and name dropping, it’s time for the green side to put up some relevant facts and logical arguments.  Or find a real problem to solve.

Solving Three Problems

We have three problems in Queensland, all created or made worse by the federal government.

  • Firstly, Canberra is about to drain our savings down the Green Hole using the Gillard carbon tax.
  •  Secondly, the Greens want to close every coal mine, promising that non-existent Green power plants will keep the lights on.
  •  Thirdly, orchardists and small towns are besieged by plagues of flying, squealing fruit bats which are protected by Canberra.

Here is the solution to all three problems.

Use Canberra’s carbon tax receipts to build a wall of wind turbines around every orchard and town plagued by flying foxes.  Three problems solved.  We get our carbon tax money invested back into Queensland, Greens get their sacred green windmills built, and the scything blades slice up the invading foxes (humanely of course).  But be sure to stock up on candles for when the wind does not blow, and ear plugs for when it does.

Green Agenda Collapsing

The European Union’s ambitious low carbon plan collapsed yesterday when Poland vetoed plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions drastically after 2020. If the Europeans can’t agree on a climate plan, the prospect that the rest of the world can agree is less than zero. Every dime spent by climate activists on this goal was wasted. Every white paper on the subject was a folly. Every global conference was a grotesque and pointless boondoggle. Every pundit who supported this agenda was blowing smoke and every politician who endorsed it was either an idiot or a demagogue — or both.

Flogging a Dead Horse

Back in July 2009, when Penny Wong’s Ration and Tax Scheme was the talk of the town, “Carbon Sense” made a forecast:

“The aging galloper “Ration-N-Tax” from the Wong stable is knackered.

“Anyone with any economic or political nous knows that the carbon cap proposals are neither politically nor economically possible in Australia or the USA. No electorate in the western world will sit by to see their standard of living reduced until their carbon emissions per capita are equal to those of India or China while they transfer their businesses and technology to these growing industrial giants of Asia.

“From now on, those pushing the RAT Scheme are flogging a dead horse. Public opinion is changing swiftly and any time soon even Malcolm Turnbull will switch his bets.

“But the canny handlers anticipated this result and have another nag saddled and ready.”

Read on: http://carbon-sense.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/carbon-tax-saddled.pdf

However the backers have overloaded “Carbon Tax” and he is already having trouble getting traction. Larry Pickering captured the scene on the Molonglo Training Circuit recently:

Wind power – more accurately wind impotence, since turbines operate at just 24 per cent of capacity – is the curse of Scotland. One of the most beautiful landscapes in Europe has been brutally ravaged, families have been driven into fuel poverty, pensioners have been presented with the lethal dilemma “heat or eat” – all to appease the neurotic prejudices of global warming fanatics.

Two Green Prophets Recant

Benny Peiser in Ccnet brings news of two leaders of Climatism who have suddenly recanted.

Fritz Vahrenholt was the best-known environmentalist in the German Social Democratic Party (SPD). Now, even Fritz Vahrenholt no longer believes in the predictions of global warming:

“Until two years ago,” he says, “I believed the IPCC and represented its recommendations in my lectures.” Doubts came to him when he was a reviewer of the IPCC report on renewable energies. “I discovered many errors and asked myself if the other IPCC reports were similarly inadequate.”

At the same time, the fact that, contrary to the predictions, the average global temperature has not risen for more than a decade made him ponder. Vahrenholt wondered if man-made greenhouse gases are really the most important factor in the climate system. After talking with dozens of scientists, he considers the influence of the sun to be underestimated. Finally, Vahrenholt cast doubt that warming is fundamentally bad for people and nature.

http://thegwpf.org/international-news/4923-solar-shift-rock-germany.html

James Lovelock, the maverick scientist who became a guru to the environmental movement with his “Gaia” theory of the Earth as a single organism, has admitted to being “alarmist” about climate change and says other environmental commentators, such as Al Gore, were too.

The Last Word

The war on carbon is moving into a new phase, getting nastier and less democratic as the alarmists get cornered.

They have lost the debate on the science of global warming, their leaders are wobbling, the weather is refusing to obey their computer models and the economic damage and dislocation caused by their massive meddling in the energy markets is becoming obvious to all. Most western governments are broke and their only real source of new funds is to claw back green energy subsidies.

But they fear retribution from an aroused electorate. Their only way to stay in power is to bribe the voters again with new handouts.

“Everything you get from the government was taken from someone else.”

 Kit Pharo

The government media apparatus and their apologists will now try to dampen debate on the carbon tax. They want the whole tax and handout apparatus to be so ingrained that the next government will be too scared to repeal it. But it must be repealed.  The whole lot.

Combine it with a few real reforms like abolition of income tax and devolution of much of the federal apparatus back to the states. It is becoming too late for tinkering, we need real reform. We have had our test of centralism and it has clearly failed. Let’s try repeal and decentralisation for a change.

However the hidden agenda is in the opposite direction. They aim to take decisions out of the hands of locals, handing over more and more power to bureaucratic bodies, “independent” commissions and organs of the United Nations. Anti-industry, anti-democratic, anti-west forces are already planning this. They meet in Rio in June. Having failed in open debate they now will seek to close debate and make decisions far from our control and oversight.

The global warming gambit has failed – the new buzz word is “sustainable development”. They will find this too is a weak reed – almost none of the government energy policies are sustainable, so we will be turning their own sustainability searchlight back in their faces.

According to stunning U.N. documents examined by Fox News, the upcoming United Nations environmental conference on sustainable development will consider a breath-taking array of carbon taxes, transfers of trillions of dollars from wealthy countries to poor ones, and new spending programs to guarantee that populations around the world are protected from the effects of the very programs the world organization wants to implement.

The main goal of the much-touted, Rio + 20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, scheduled to be held in Brazil from June 20-23, is to make dramatic and enormously expensive changes in the way that the world does nearly everything—or, as one of the documents puts it, “a fundamental shift in the way we think and act.”
